Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Vince Williams stated that the current stretch of the offseason is the most difficult time for rookies. He shared his insights in an interview with SNR’s Brian Batko and Ed Troup on Monday.
Williams noted that rookies lack the structure of practices and games during this period. Without daily guidance from coaches, players may form bad habits or fail to follow their strength and conditioning plans properly.
He recalled his own rookie year, when he returned home excited but trained less seriously than in later seasons. Williams added that veterans use this time differently to identify areas for improvement.
The Steelers have a 10-man rookie class, their largest in more than a decade. First-round pick Max Iheanachor is competing for a starting right tackle role, while other draftees like Germie Bernard and Gennings Dunker face immediate opportunities.
Williams emphasized that the next six weeks serve as preparation ahead of the report date rather than a vacation.
