OpenAI introduces trusted contact feature for ChatGPT users

OpenAI has rolled out an optional safety tool allowing adult ChatGPT users to designate one trusted adult who can be alerted about potential self-harm risks detected in conversations. The feature, called Trusted Contact, involves human review before any notification is sent.

Several major technology companies have joined a new foundation aimed at developing common standards for artificial intelligence systems.

OpenAI has begun rolling out an optional Lockdown Mode to provide extra security against prompt injection attacks for users handling sensitive data. The feature limits certain capabilities in ChatGPT and other products to reduce risks of data exfiltration. It is available to all personal accounts, including those on the free tier.

A jury was selected on Monday in federal court in Oakland, California, for Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman. Some jurors expressed concerns about Musk and AI technology but assured the court they could remain impartial. The trial centers on allegations that OpenAI abandoned its nonprofit mission.

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that OpenAI is developing a smartphone featuring AI agents to replace traditional apps. The device would involve partnerships with MediaTek, Qualcomm for chip design, and Luxshare for manufacturing. Specifications and suppliers are expected to be finalized by late 2026 or early 2027, with production in 2028.

OpenAI has launched GPT-Rosalind, a large language model trained specifically on biology workflows. The model, named after scientist Rosalind Franklin, aims to address challenges in handling massive biological datasets and specialized subfields. Access is currently limited to US-based entities due to safety concerns.

San Francisco police arrested a 20-year-old man early Thursday after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's North Beach residence. The suspect later threatened to burn down OpenAI's headquarters before his capture. No injuries were reported in the incident.
