75 communes without candidates for 2026 municipal elections

For the 2026 municipal elections, 75 French communes have registered no candidacies, preventing any vote on March 15 and 22. These municipalities will come under special delegation pending new elections. This issue mainly affects small communes, with numbers stable compared to previous polls.

Candidacies for the first round of the municipal elections have been filed, but 75 of France's 34,953 communes have no lists. With no vote possible on March 15 and 22, these local entities will automatically enter a special delegation regime, managed by the state until a new poll is organized.

This figure remains relatively stable: 64 communes were affected in 2014 and 106 in 2020. All impacted communes have fewer than 1,500 inhabitants, and three-quarters have under 500. Only two had faced this in 2020: Dompierre-les-Tilleuls in Doubs (291 inhabitants) and Orbigny-au-Mont in Haute-Marne (138 inhabitants). The most affected areas include French Polynesia with 7 communes, as well as Haute-Saône and Doubs with 5 each.

The lack of interest in the mayoral role is often linked to growing administrative and financial burdens. Additionally, the 2025 reform on voting methods now requires complete and gender-parity lists in all communes, a rule previously limited to those over 1,000 inhabitants. Political scientist Romain Pasquier, research director at CNRS, notes that this reform may have contributed to the challenge. “The presented lists must now be complete and respect parity across all communes,” he explains.

The official campaign for France's 2026 municipal elections began on March 2, featuring over 50 000 lists and 900 000 candidates across 34 944 communes. Despite parity mandated by a 2025 law, more than three-quarters of the lists are led by men. The votes are scheduled for March 15 and 22.

Paris's municipal elections, scheduled for March 15 and 22, 2026, introduce a new voting system that breaks with tradition. Adopted in 2025 at the urging of Rachida Dati, the reform allows voters to cast separate ballots for their arrondissement and the central city hall. This change, amid the capital's other peculiarities, opens unexpected prospects in the race for City Hall.

The municipal elections on March 15 and 22 will elect not only mayors but also community councilors for intercommunalités, or 'intercos.' These structures, grouping communes to handle key local competencies, remain little known to the public despite their central role. Anne Terlez, vice president of Agglo Seine-Eure, stresses the need to raise voter awareness of this dual stake.

Amid a national retreat from ecological ambitions, emblematic environmental measures are becoming more consensual at the municipal level. In Paris, Les Républicains candidate Rachida Dati includes green proposals in her program for the March 15 and 22, 2026 elections. Yet, some issues remain contentious.

Paris's left-wing parties, excluding La France insoumise, have approved a historic agreement to field a united list from the first round of the March 2026 municipal elections, backing Socialist candidate Emmanuel Grégoire.

Only 22% of French people trust politics, according to the 17th wave of the Cevipof barometer, a figure far below that of European neighbors. This disarray stems from 18 months without a majority in the National Assembly, fostering a sense of democratic inefficiency. Ahead of the March 2026 municipal elections, French voters remain committed to voting despite their doubts.
