The African People’s Convention (APC) has declared its openness to forming coalitions in hung municipalities for the upcoming local government elections. Party leader Themba Godi made the statement during the party's Election Summit in Johannesburg.
The African People’s Convention (APC) is holding its Central Executive Committee meeting and Election Summit in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, this weekend to prepare for the local government elections.
Party leader Themba Godi said coalition governments will be a key feature, with the APC ready to join coalitions in hung municipalities provided governance principles are met. “We are more than willing and are preparing ourselves to be part of any coalition. From a principal point of view, we are open to discussing with anybody and everybody who may come to us and say, ‘Look, we would want to form a coalition with you.’ Whether we accept or do not accept, a party will be based on the extent to which our governance programme addresses the needs of the people,” Godi stated.
The summit programme includes reviews of organisational performance, membership growth, election targets, and the broader political climate. Provincial elections teams and identified candidates are crafting strategic and tactical approaches, aiming for clarity on timelines and targets by Monday.
The APC plans to contest in at least eight of the nine provinces, deliberately excluding the Western Cape to avoid overstretching its structures. Provinces are deciding which municipalities to target based on local realities, with further focus on candidate selection and campaign programmes.
