BMKG warns of light to heavy rain in major Indonesian cities

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for light to heavy rain, possibly accompanied by lightning and strong winds, in various major cities on Wednesday. The forecast is influenced by convergence areas stretching from the Gulf of Thailand to the southern Vietnam coast. Residents are advised to beware of tidal flooding in certain coastal areas.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced a weather early warning for various major cities on Wednesday (October 29, 2025). According to BMKG forecaster Wahyu Annisa, convergence conditions stretch from the Gulf of Thailand to the southern Vietnam coast, in West Kalimantan and the Sulawesi Sea, waters north to east of Aceh, Riau to Riau Islands waters, Lampung to South Sumatra, North Java Sea, and Central Java to Karimata Strait. "This condition can increase the potential for rain cloud development along the areas passed by convergence or confluence," she stated, quoted from BMKG's official website.

Several major cities are likely to experience moderate to heavy rain with thunder and strong winds, including Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, Serang, Bandung, Semarang, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Tanjung Selor, Samarinda, Mamuju, Kendari, Nabire, and Merauke. Meanwhile, cities such as Medan, Pangkal Pinang, Jambi, Mataram, Denpasar, Palangkaraya, Banjarmasin, Manado, Gorontalo, Palu, Makassar, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Jayapura, and Jayawijaya are forecast to have light to moderate rain. However, Jambi is also listed among cloudy cities, indicating possible forecast variations.

Other cities like Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Banda Aceh, Padang, Palembang, Surabaya, Kupang, and Pontianak are expected to be mostly cloudy. For sea conditions, wave heights are generally 0.5 to 2.5 meters, but could reach over 2.5 to 4 meters in the southern Indian Ocean off Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara Barat. BMKG urges the public to be alert for tidal flooding on the coasts of Bangka Belitung Islands, North Tangerang, North Jakarta, Central Java, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and Maluku.
