The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has issued upgrade requirements for Kasarani and Raila Odinga Talanta stadiums before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are set to co-host the tournament. The demands come as Kenya's hosting rights remain uncertain over an unpaid Ksh 3.9 billion fee.
Caf has specified areas for improvement at Kasarani Stadium to meet Afcon standards. These include reconfiguring spectator flow and segregation, developing hospitality areas such as VIP, VVIP and skyboxes, and reconstructing the pitch with proper drainage and irrigation systems. It also called for relocating the Venue Operations Centre (VOC), installing 3,000-lux floodlights, and upgrading safety, security and media facilities.
For the still-under-construction Raila Odinga Talanta Stadium, Caf recommended validating spectator movement plans, zoning for teams, officials and media, and ensuring coordination of lighting, backup power and safety systems.
Nyayo Stadium falls short of standards and may serve only as a training venue. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya assured that the government would pay the required Ksh 3.9 billion hosting fee on time to secure Kenya's rights.
