Abelardo De La Espriella received his credential as president-elect yesterday in Bogotá. In his speech he promised security and firmness against illegal groups. The Pacto Histórico party declared itself in opposition to the new government.
The National Electoral Council delivered the credential to Abelardo De La Espriella and his vice president José Manuel Restrepo Abondano in pavilion 5 of Corferias in Bogotá on the morning of June 26. Both will serve for four years starting August 7.
In his first speech as president-elect De La Espriella thanked God and criticized outgoing president Gustavo Petro. He announced that groups outside the law have one month to submit to the rule of law and promised anti-corruption audits.
The Pacto Histórico party issued a statement the same day declaring itself in firm and democratic opposition. Its 26 senators and 43 representatives will defend agrarian labor and peace reforms.
