Ethiopia advances efforts to strengthen regional power interconnection

Ethiopian Electric Power chief executive Ashenafi Balcha said Ethiopia is intensifying efforts to boost renewable energy and regional power links.

In a statement in Addis Ababa, engineer Ashenafi Balcha noted that Ethiopia has completed three major projects in recent years, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. All electricity generated comes from renewable and clean sources, he said. Ethiopia supplies power to Djibouti, Sudan and Kenya. Trials are under way to sell to Tanzania, while studies continue for links with other countries. Exports account for less than ten per cent of total output. Construction of the Koysha hydropower project is advancing rapidly. Sixteen transmission and distribution stations are also under construction.
