Ex-president Yoon refuses special counsel questioning again

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol did not appear for a second summons by a special counsel team investigating his alleged interference in a military probe. The team has notified him to appear on Tuesday. Yoon is in custody over his failed martial law bid in December.

In Seoul on November 8, former President Yoon Suk Yeol failed to appear for questioning by a special counsel team over allegations of interfering in a military investigation into a 2023 Marine's death. The team summoned him on Monday to appear at 10 a.m. Saturday, but he did not show up.

Yoon had previously ignored a summons on October 23, citing his lawyers' trial schedules. Following this second defiance, the investigation team notified him again to appear on Tuesday.

Yoon is in custody for his failed attempt to impose martial law in December and faces separate charges of abusing power and aiding a criminal's flight related to the Marine case. Investigators suspect he directed the presidential office and defense ministry to overturn initial findings of the military probe into Cpl. Chae Su-geun's death to shield a then-Marine commander from responsibility.

He is also suspected of helping former Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup avoid accountability by appointing him ambassador to Australia in March 2024. The Marine died in July 2023 after being swept away in a swollen stream during a search for heavy rain victims, without proper safety gear like a life vest.
