Former Baja California governor arrested for fuel smuggling

Mexico's federal prosecutor's office arrested Ernesto ‘N’, the former governor of Baja California, on charges of organized crime and fuel smuggling.

The arrest took place on the afternoon of Thursday, July 16, in Ensenada, Baja California. Officers from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection carried out the arrest warrant issued by the FGR.

Ernesto ‘N’ governed the state from 1989 to 1995 and was the first opposition governor to the PRI. The investigation links the politician to the company Ingemar S.A. de C.V., from which authorities seized more than 15 million liters of illegal fuel in Coahuila last year.

The former governor had denied any connection to the case at the time and said he was willing to cooperate with authorities. The politician remains in federal custody.
