Gachagua proposes 'Jicho Pevu' as sole opposition candidate for Mombasa governor

Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has proposed that Nyali MP Mohamed Ali serve as the unified opposition candidate for Mombasa governor. He noted that ally Kalonzo Musyoka agrees, though they have yet to decide on the party under which Ali will run.

Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has proposed that Nyali MP Mohamed Ali, popularly known as 'Jicho Pevu', become the single opposition candidate for Mombasa governor through an alliance. The suggestion highlights efforts to consolidate opposition forces in coastal politics, where a unified front could challenge ruling party dominance.

Gachagua stated that his opposition ally, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, supports the idea. However, they have not yet agreed on whether Ali will run under Wiper or DCP. “Mr. Musyoka has great popularity here in Mombasa just like me and he has agreed to back Mr. Ali. What we haven't agreed on is which party he will run under between Wiper and DCP. But we are one thing; we will agree,” Gachagua said.

He defended Ali against politicians linking him to tribalism, asserting that any Kenyan has the right to contest for Mombasa governor. Gachagua also praised Ali's record, noting his two terms elected via UDA, marked by strong leadership and no corruption scandals. This proposal underscores the opposition's push for unity in Pwani politics to strengthen their position.
