Groups denounce illegal road near Tren Maya in Tulum

Sélvame MX and the Centro Mexicano de Derecho Ambiental filed a complaint over a 16-kilometer road built by the army in Tulum. The project sits atop the Sistema Sac Actun, one of the world's largest aquifers.

The organizations stated that the road crosses virgin jungle without serving local communities or improving travel to Chetumal or Tulum. According to their statement, its real aim is to enable real estate speculation.

Pepe Tiburón, a Sélvame MX representative, said the route amounts to “a 16-kilometer scar opened in virgin jungle with the sole purpose of triggering real estate speculation.” The groups warned of irreversible risks due to the peninsula’s karst terrain.

The project adds to other works tied to the Tren Maya that have already affected cenotes and fragmented the regional ecosystem, the complainants noted.
