São Paulo's Heliópolis favela hosts the local Orquestra de Heliópolis and musicians from London's Royal Academy of Music at Teatro Baccarelli this Saturday. The event features masterclasses and a concert at 3 p.m., fostering cultural exchange and artistic training. The initiative comes from the Inspirar-te organization in partnership with Instituto Baccarelli.
Teatro Baccarelli, Brazil's first classical concert hall in a favela opened last year, hosts an unprecedented meeting this Saturday, April 11. The Orquestra de Heliópolis, formed by youths from Instituto Baccarelli, joins professors and students from the Royal Academy of Music, founded in 1822 and one of the world's most prestigious music institutions.
Inspirar-te, established in 2016 to drive social change through art and culture, conceived the project. "The project stems from the understanding that culture is a fundamental right and that art can act as a vector for social transformation," states Francesca Parodi from the Department of Communication, Culture, and Society for Social Impact. Instituto Baccarelli serves over 1,650 children and youths in the community.
Royal Academy professors will lead masterclasses, with students from the British St. Paul’s school joining the exchange. "At St. Paul’s, we believe true learning happens when young people have the opportunity to interact with people from various perspectives and communities," says director Titus Edge. The concert, featuring the Orquestra de Cordas and youth choir, starts at 3 p.m., with tickets available on the theater's website.
For Brazilian musicians, the event broadens artistic horizons; for visitors, it provides insight into local cultural dynamics.
