Kenya's automobile association launches new international driving permit

The Automobile Association of Kenya (AA Kenya) launched a new International Driving Permit (IDP) on February 25, 2026, enabling Kenyans to drive legally in over 150 countries without taking local tests or applying for foreign licenses.

The new permit, redesigned in a passport-style format with enhanced security features, stems from a rise in fake permits that have led to Kenyans being detained abroad. AA Kenya states that the IDP includes digital verification capability, allowing authorities worldwide to authenticate it instantly.

Over 5 million licensed drivers in Kenya are encouraged to convert their local licenses to this internationally recognized permit, which costs Ksh12,000 annually and is valid under international road traffic conventions. It applies to work, study, and travel abroad, opening opportunities for Kenyans seeking driver jobs in more than 150 nations.

To qualify, applicants must hold a valid license from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), have been driving in Kenya for at least two years, and be at least 18 years old. Applications are processed at AA Kenya branches or via its online portal, and holders must carry both the IDP and their original Kenyan license while abroad.

Required documents include a completed application form, two passport-size photographs signed on the back, a photocopy of the driving license, and a copy of a national ID or passport. AA Kenya members may receive benefits based on their membership type, potentially reducing or waiving the annual fee.

President William Ruto has received and endorsed recommendations from the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) to improve road safety in Kenya. The recommendations include mandatory defensive driving certification for public service vehicle (PSV) operators and the rollout of decentralised vehicle inspections through a public-private partnership starting July 1. He also ordered the installation of smart traffic cameras and an instant fines system in major cities within one month.

Huduma Kenya has clarified that smart driving licence processing takes 4 to 8 weeks at a cost of KSh3,050. This responds to a public query but contrasts NTSA's prior statement of about five days. Motorists have complained of delays since January 2026.
