KMPDU top officials re-elected after court dismisses election halt bid

All senior officials of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) retained their positions in elections on April 2, a day after the Employment and Labour Relations Court dismissed a bid to halt the vote. Some 6,231 members participated, representing 70% of eligible voters.

Elections at the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) on Thursday, April 2, resulted in the re-election of its entire top leadership team.

National Chairperson Abidan Mwachi secured 66.59% of the votes against Deogracious Maero's 21.2% and Benjamin Magare's 11.74%. Secretary General Davji Atellah was re-elected unopposed, as were Deputy Chairperson David Mundia and National Treasurer Mercy Nabwire. Deputy Secretary General Dennis Miskellah won with 69.64%, defeating Wendy Kimbui who got 29.99%.

The vote proceeded a day after the Employment and Labour Relations Court rejected a petition from challengers including Kimbui, Maero, and Clarence Mweresa. They argued the Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) was improperly constituted and lacked independence, having been reappointed from the May 2021 elections that courts had nullified.

The court ruled that conservatory orders require evidence of rights violations or imminent harm, a threshold the petitioners failed to meet. It added that issues like voter registers should be handled internally rather than through premature judicial intervention.
