Uppsala Municipality, the Knutbybygden i samverkan local council, and local retailer ICA Nära Knuten inaugurated the Knutby summer market square on April 1. The project forms part of the municipality's efforts to develop rural areas and enhance local influence via neighborhood and village councils.

Rafael Waters (S), chair of the street and community environment committee, highlighted the initiative's importance. "Uppsala Municipality aims to be Sweden's best rural municipality, and local village councils are a key tool for increasing influence for rural residents," he said at the opening.

Micael Rydstedt, chair of the village council, described the square as an accessible meeting spot. "Knutby summer market square creates a meeting point in the village center always open to everyone," he stated. Marcus Martinsson, store manager at ICA Nära Knuten, noted it bolsters the store's role as a community hub.

Uppsala Municipality is Sweden's largest rural area by population, with a quarter of residents living outside the city. The square complements a network of 13 neighborhood and village councils plus nine service points, including ICA Nära Knuten.
