The French Parliament adopted a law on Tuesday recognizing the state's wrongs toward more than 2,000 Reunionese minors displaced between 1962 and 1984.
The Senate voted unanimously on the bill, following an identical vote in the National Assembly. The measure creates a memory commission, establishes a national day of homage on February 18, and provides for a lump-sum allowance paid by a state fund.
Overseas Minister Naïma Moutchou hailed a "text of justice and dignity." Senator Viviane Malet described the adoption as "a new memorial stone in a long path of reconstruction."
Between 1962 and 1984, 2,015 minors were transferred from La Réunion to 83 mainland departments, mainly rural ones. The bill draws on similar mechanisms adopted in 2005 and 2022.
