Coaches and agents at the 2026 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas are preparing for possible roster changes if recent college players return under new eligibility challenges.
The NCAA's age-based eligibility rule, set to begin in the 2026-27 season, limits athletes to five years to play five seasons. Lawsuits from the 2025-26 senior class seek an extra year, with cases filed in Ohio, Georgia, Tennessee and California.
Agents have contacted high-major coaching staffs in the past two weeks to gauge interest in adding 21- or 22-year-old players later this offseason. Several coaches, speaking anonymously, said they would consider the option if it strengthens their teams.
An injunction granted to 15 players in an Ohio case is scheduled for a hearing in August. One high-major coach stated, "It's not a 'could this happen,' it's a 'this is going to happen.'"
Coaches expressed reluctance to expand eligibility loopholes but noted pressure to improve rosters if opportunities arise. The situation remains unresolved pending court outcomes.
