Protest in SP demands justice for Tainara Souza Santos

Demonstrators gathered in northern São Paulo on Saturday (13/12) to demand justice for Tainara Souza Santos, who was run over and dragged by her ex-boyfriend on November 29. The protest followed the same route she would have taken that day on Marginal Tietê. Tainara awoke from her induced coma on Friday but had both legs amputated.

On Saturday (13/12), demonstrators gathered at 2 p.m. on Avenida Tenente Amaro Felicíssimo da Silveira in Vila Maria, northern São Paulo, to demand justice for Tainara Souza Santos. The protest followed the same path she would have taken returning home after a party, when she was brutally attacked by her ex-boyfriend, Douglas Alves da Silva, 26, on November 29 on Marginal Tietê.

Tainara remains hospitalized at Hospital das Clínicas in central São Paulo. On Friday (12/12), nearly two weeks after the crime, she opened her eyes for the first time, emerging from induced coma. According to a friend, Tainara awoke agitated and tried to remove her mechanical ventilation tube, leading doctors to tie her hands. 'The little rascal is so strong that the nurse said: “Mom, she's so naughty, the little naughty one is tough, you know, she already raised her hand when she opened her eyes and wanted to remove the tube. So we had to tie her little hands”', the friend reported. The device is to be removed on Saturday. She contracted a mild bacteria, treated with medication, without severity.

The protest organizers demand effective protections for women and a fight against femicide. “Taynara lost both legs. She lost her future. She lost dreams that will never bloom again. But she will not lose our voice. She will not lose our cry for justice. We will not allow her story to be silenced,” the group stated.

Douglas Alves da Silva, with whom Tainara had a sporadic relationship, became a defendant for attempted femicide. Judge Paula Marie Konno accepted the indictment, citing evidence of authorship and materiality of the crime. He was driving at high speed, hit the victim, and continued dragging her. Preventive detention was upheld to protect public order and witnesses. The accused was arrested on November 30 in a hotel in Vila Prudente, eastern zone, and transferred to CDP II in Guarulhos on December 8.

Security cameras captured the hit-and-run: Tainara was walking with another young man when struck by a black car.
