Ramaphosa clears Andrew Chauke to return as Gauteng DPP after inquiry

President Cyril Ramaphosa has cleared South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions Andrew Chauke to return to work. The Nkabinde Inquiry found no evidence to support allegations against him.

President Cyril Ramaphosa wrote to Chauke on 21 July that he accepted the panel’s findings. He stated there was no basis to conclude Chauke was unfit for office.

The inquiry, chaired by retired Justice Bess Nkabinde, examined claims that Chauke had interfered in cases involving Richard Mdluli and the Cato Manor unit. It concluded there was no credible evidence of unlawful conduct.

Ramaphosa suspended Chauke in July 2025 after former NPA head Shamila Batohi raised concerns. The panel began hearings in November 2025 and delivered its report this month.

The Presidency said on 22 July that Chauke’s decisions were not irrational. It added that the matter’s conclusion allows him to resume duties.
