President William Ruto has revealed progress on a project to tarmac more than 250 kilometers of roads in Nairobi County. He said 67 kilometers are already under construction, with the next 70 kilometers starting next week. The announcements follow a deal with Governor Johnson Sakaja.
President William Ruto spoke during a Sunday service at Karen Africa Gospel Church (AGC) in Nairobi on April 19. He stated, “So as I told the leadership of Nairobi, already we have mapped out almost 250 kilometres of tarmac around Nairobi.” He added, “67 kilometers is already under construction, and we are starting the next almost 70 kilometres in the next week or so, and then the rest will follow.”
Ruto stressed the need to improve Nairobi to give visitors a better impression of Kenya. “So if they get the wrong impression of Nairobi, they will carry the wrong impression of Kenya, and therefore it is important for us to get this city to clearly represent and properly represent our country,” he highlighted.
The announcements follow a Ksh80 billion joint cooperation agreement signed by Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on February 17 at State House, Nairobi. The deal covers roads, water, housing, and waste management without transferring county functions to the national government.
Ruto also announced plans for more than 40,000 street lights across Nairobi, including in estates, to make it a 24-hour city. This forms part of a broader commitment to tarmac over 28,000 kilometers of roads nationwide within seven years under his “Singapore Dream” vision.
