Sun and minus degrees on Christmas Eve – no snow in south

The forecast for Christmas Eve points to bright sun and crisp minus degrees across almost all of Sweden, but no snow is expected in the southern parts. The snow line runs high up in the country, potentially making it the greenest Christmas since 2020. Meteorologist Lasse Rydkvist predicts frost that could add a white touch to the bare ground.

According to meteorologist Lasse Rydkvist at Klart, the weather on Christmas Eve will be sunny and cold across large parts of the country. Temperatures will drop to minus degrees as a high-pressure system from the north takes over after the moist low-pressure from the Atlantic. The snow line stretches diagonally from northern Dalafjällen in the west to north of Umeå in the east, and south of it, snow is entirely absent.

"It might lay a bit of frost on the bare ground, which brightens things up a little", says Rydkvist. He warns that it could be the greenest Christmas since 2020, with thin snow even where it exists. December has so far been cloudy in Stockholm, with only 28 minutes of sun, but the sun will appear already on Sunday, December 21, and continue into the Christmas week.

"Already tomorrow there will be quite a bit of sun around the country. So it's still a brightening in that sense that there's more room for December sun", explains Rydkvist. The dry and cold air on Christmas Eve promises clear weather in large parts of Sweden.

Hope for snow persists in the days after Christmas, however. A low-pressure system could move in on December 27 and bring snow showers. "It could carry some snow with it. The question is how far south it reaches. Currently, it could give a few individual centimeters in Svealand and northern Götaland", states Rydkvist. The minus degrees create optimal conditions for the snow to stay.

Sweden's dark December: Sunshine forecast after record-low start

Following an exceptionally sun-poor start to December 2025—previously reported as less than five hours of sun in many areas up to mid-month—this year ranks among Sweden's darkest in 15 years. Relief is coming: sunny weather is expected across much of the country by the weekend, coinciding with the winter solstice on Sunday when days begin to lengthen.

The forecast for Christmas Eve points to mild weather without snow in most of Sweden. Meteorologists warn of continued warm and wet December conditions, though the north has seen snowfall. A small chance exists for snow in the south if cold air moves southward.

Sweden's Christmas weather is turning unusual, with milder temperatures in the north than in the south. Meteorologist Fredrik Cronvall at SMHI predicts it could be warmer in Jokkmokk than in Skåne on Christmas Day. The holiday brings a mix of sun, rain, and snow, with warnings for mountain weather.

Statistics from the German Weather Service indicate that white Christmases in Germany are becoming rarer. There used to be more snow during the holidays, but climate change is leading to milder temperatures. The probability of snow never exceeded 20 percent in major cities.

A heavy snowstorm has moved into Skåne from Germany on Monday, with SMHI issuing an orange warning for up to 30 centimeters of snow in the southeast. Public transport is canceled and authorities urge people to stay home. Preparations have been strengthened following past chaos.

An unusually long high-pressure blocking is keeping the cold in place across Sweden for the coming week. Temperatures are expected to be very low, and warm clothing is advised. The phenomenon is described as a 'dome' holding the heat out.

Morning temperatures in Seoul plunged to minus 11 degrees Celsius on Friday, December 26, as a severe cold snap gripped South Korea the day after Christmas. The Korea Meteorological Administration reported this as the season's lowest, with cold wave alerts issued across Gangwon Province. Daytime highs are expected to reach minus 7 to 2 degrees Celsius, with light snow or rain forecast for Jeolla provinces and Jeju Island.
