Three injured as police clash with protesters in Moyale

At least three people were injured when police opened fire on demonstrators in Moyale town on Thursday. The protesters were calling for the release of two abducted elders and an end to the construction of a proposed security camp.

The clashes broke out after a morning of peaceful protests. Police responded with teargas, and witnesses said officers then fired live rounds, leaving one person wounded by a bullet. The injured were taken to Moyale Sub-County Referral Hospital.

Demonstrators demanded the release of former Chief Dabassa Dambi and Community Elder Gurach Dambala, who were reportedly abducted on May 9 and May 10. They also called for a stop to the planned Tittu security camp and voiced concerns over boundary changes that they say transfer parts of Marsabit County to Wajir County.

Similar protests took place in Saku, Sololo and Bori Junction. One participant stated that the elders had been targeted for speaking out against actions by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.

The latest unrest follows a highway blockade at Sololo junction on Sunday, May 10, when residents first raised the same grievances.
