Tinubu consoles injured Anthony Joshua after fatal Ogun State crash

President Bola Tinubu personally called boxer Anthony Joshua following the December 29 road crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that killed two associates and injured the athlete. Tinubu offered condolences, prayers for recovery, and coordinated with governors providing top medical care.

President Tinubu, while abroad, spoke by phone with Joshua, his mother, and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital ensuring premium care. In a statement via spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said: “I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital.”

Tinubu had earlier posted on X: “I sympathise with you and your family... As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country... I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace... May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed.”

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu updated that Joshua and another injured passenger were moved to a specialised Lagos facility. “Following several clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency interventions... Joshua is conscious and communicating with his family,” he said.

Ogun and Lagos governors are jointly managing support for the injured and deceased's families, with crash investigations underway.
