Waste piles in Dannemora to be removed by landowner

The three waste piles in Dannemora, worrying residents for six years since Think Pink began dumping there in 2020, are set for removal. Östhammars municipality has placed responsibility on landowner Dannemora Iron AB, giving them two years. "We know people have been worried," says Lina Lendahl, team leader at the environmental unit.

Three piles of construction waste in large building bags remain in Dannemora's old mining area in Östhammars municipality. They have been there since 2020, when waste handler Think Pink started dumping in the area. Local residents have expressed concerns for six years.

Several individuals linked to Think Pink were convicted of gross environmental crime for handling waste hazardously at up to 20 sites across Sweden. With the company bankrupt, the municipality cannot hold it accountable for removal. "I hope we can put an end to this now," says Lina Lendahl.

Responsibility now lies with landowner Dannemora Iron AB. The municipality's order gives the firm two years to clear the piles and mandates sampling to assess risks to surroundings, Lendahl said.

All ten convicted in district court have appealed to the court of appeal seeking acquittal. The prosecutor also appealed, including over one acquittal. Hearings are expected to continue until summer 2026.
