AFA rules Gimnasia de Jujuy loses match to Deportivo Madryn

The AFA's Disciplinary Tribunal ruled Gimnasia de Jujuy's quarterfinal Reducido Nacional match against Deportivo Madryn lost 3-0, suspended due to threats against referee Lucas Comesaña. The sanction includes a fine and summons for the club's officials. The return leg will take place on Sunday with an advantage for the Chubut team.

On October 19, during the first leg of the Reducido Nacional quarterfinals at the 23 de Agosto Stadium in San Salvador de Jujuy, Gimnasia de Jujuy faced Deportivo Madryn. At the end of the first half, with the score 1-0 in favor of the home team, referee Lucas Comesaña suspended the match due to threats from Gimnasia officials against him and the other judges.

Comesaña described the incident in an interview with TyC Sports: “It was a very tense moment, something that should never happen in football.” He added: “I suspended the match because of things that shouldn't happen. The threat was towards all four judges, first to the fourth official and then to everyone, specifically to the fourth and to me.”

The AFA's Disciplinary Tribunal reviewed the referee's report and both clubs' defenses, ruling on Monday to award the match lost to Gimnasia 3-0 in favor of Deportivo Madryn. It also imposed a fine equivalent to 2,500 tickets (v.e.) under article 15.1 of the Disciplinary Code and summoned president Walter Morales and secretary Leandro Meyer, accused of involvement.

The ruling rejected resuming the match, despite Gimnasia's offer to cover their rival's expenses. With this advantage, Deportivo Madryn will host the return leg on Sunday, November 2, at 4 p.m. at Abel Sastre Stadium. Gimnasia will need to win by four goals to advance to the semifinals, amid a scandal aimed at preventing similar incidents in Argentine football.
