The parents of Shivaan Cumberledge, a 12-year-old boy who died last week in Verulam, have rejected claims that he was neglected. Neighbours alleged the child was left alone with his four-year-old sibling while his parents were away.
Sheldon Cumberledge and Leanne Govindsamy said they love and care deeply for their children. The father was at a temporary job and the mother had travelled with two younger siblings to attend a two-day funeral prayer.
Adeshni Naicker of Childline KwaZulu-Natal noted that the death has prompted wider discussion on children's mental health during Child Protection Month. She highlighted rising calls to the organisation linked to self-esteem issues, bullying and academic pressure.
Naicker added that children already face heavy burdens and extra domestic responsibilities can worsen the situation. She pointed to multiple factors that contribute to suicide ideation among young people.
