Le suicide présumé d'un enfant de 12 ans à Verulam suscite des accusations de négligence infantile

Les parents de Shivaan Cumberledge, un garçon de 12 ans décédé la semaine dernière à Verulam, ont rejeté les allégations selon lesquelles il aurait été victime de négligence. Des voisins ont affirmé que l'enfant avait été laissé seul avec son frère ou sa sœur de quatre ans pendant l'absence de ses parents.

Sheldon Cumberledge et Leanne Govindsamy ont déclaré qu'ils aiment et prennent profondément soin de leurs enfants. Le père occupait un emploi temporaire et la mère était partie avec deux autres enfants plus jeunes pour assister à une prière funéraire de deux jours.

Adeshni Naicker, de l'organisation Childline KwaZulu-Natal, a noté que ce décès a suscité un débat plus large sur la santé mentale des enfants en ce Mois de la protection de l'enfance. Elle a souligné l'augmentation des appels reçus par l'organisation liés à des problèmes d'estime de soi, de harcèlement et de pression scolaire.

Naicker a ajouté que les enfants font déjà face à de lourds fardeaux et que des responsabilités domestiques supplémentaires peuvent aggraver la situation. Elle a pointé du doigt les multiples facteurs qui contribuent aux idées suicidaires chez les jeunes.
