BJP president Nitin Nabin and Union Minister J.P. Nadda marked the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency by condemning Congress actions and calling for accountability.
Marking the anniversary of the Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, BJP leaders described the period as the darkest chapter in Indian democracy.
Nabin stated on X that it was a deliberate attack on the Constitution, democratic institutions, and civil liberties in the greed to save power. He noted that the struggle of democracy fighters ultimately restored democracy and described Samvidhan Hatya Diwas as a pledge to protect constitutional values.
Nadda, speaking at a Samvidhan Hatya Diwas event in Patna, urged Rahul Gandhi to apologise for his grandmother Indira Gandhi’s anti-Constitution actions. He cited forced sterilisation of around 1.1 crore people, the 42nd Constitutional Amendment extending elected terms to six years, and restrictions on courts. Ravi Shankar Prasad also recalled attacks on institutions and praised the resistance by outlets including The Indian Express.
