Brandenburg gate illuminated in EU colors for Europe Day

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was illuminated in the colors of the EU flag for Europe Day. The landmark shone in blue light from sunset until midnight on Saturday, along with the EU flag and the slogan «United in diversity».

The lighting marked Berlin's celebration of European unity. Governing Mayor Kai Wegner said in a Senate statement: «With the illumination of the Brandenburg Gate on Europe Day, we celebrate European unification».

Europe Day takes place each year on 9 May. It commemorates the 1950 declaration by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman that founded the European Coal and Steel Community and laid the foundation for today's European Union.
