Brown Mogotsi appears in court over staged shooting claims

North West businessman Brown Mogotsi appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court facing five charges linked to an alleged staged shooting incident. Police revealed that the firearm involved has connections to prior crimes. A bail application is set for next week.

Mogotsi, an ANC fixer, was arrested on 15 May 2026 after testifying at the Madlanga Commission. He faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, discharging a firearm in a public place, defeating the ends of justice and perjury.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe stated outside the court that ballistic tests linked the gun to an armed robbery in Roodepoort in 2020 and a murder in Eldorado Park in 2021. She noted that the weapon remains missing and urged Mogotsi to cooperate with investigators.

The shooting occurred in November 2025 in Vosloorus. Mogotsi had initially claimed he was ambushed by unknown gunmen. His lawyer, Makau Sekgatja, acknowledged the seriousness of the charges but expressed hope that the court would exonerate his client.

The case was adjourned until 25 May 2026 for a formal bail application.
