Feroz Khan, an embattled Crime Intelligence officer, was shot in the abdomen in Houghton, Johannesburg, on the evening of 28 June 2026. He was scheduled to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 1 July.
Khan was in a critical condition after the shooting and was expected to undergo further surgery. Advocate Zubair Khan, speaking on his behalf, told journalists on 29 June that Khan had expressed fears for his safety and had been travelling in unmarked vehicles.
The South African Police Service said teams from the Gauteng Hawks, Crime Intelligence, the Detective Service and the Political Killings Task Team were investigating the incident as an attempted assassination. Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane said no resource would be spared.
The Madlanga Commission confirmed it was aware of the shooting and described Khan as a key witness. A commission spokesperson said it would engage with his legal representatives and make an announcement regarding its programme for 1 July.
SAPS stated it was premature to link the attack to Khan’s anticipated appearance before the commission. Khan was arrested last month in an illicit precious metals case.
