Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty arrived in Beirut on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, marking his fourth visit to Lebanon in under 18 months, directed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. He met with President Joseph Aoun, Speaker Nabih Berri, and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to discuss enhancing bilateral relations and bolstering Lebanon's stability amid escalating tensions along its southern border.
The talks centered on growing concerns over the pace and scope of Israeli assaults on Lebanese territory. Abdelatty stressed the need for serious measures to avert further escalation and called for the full, simultaneous implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. "It is essential to prevent a slide into greater tension," said Ambassador Tamim Khalaf, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman, after the meeting with Berri. He further emphasized halting all Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty and enabling the Lebanese Army to fulfill its duties nationwide.
In his discussion with President Aoun, Abdelatty relayed Sisi's greetings and congratulations on Lebanon's Independence Day, expressing Egypt's appreciation for its symbolism in fostering national unity. Prime Minister Salam conveyed deep gratitude for Egypt's historical positions and ongoing role in supporting Lebanon's stability, affirming the Lebanese government's commitment to close coordination with Cairo.
The conversations also addressed bilateral developments, with Abdelatty expressing satisfaction with the positive trajectory following Salam's recent visit to Cairo, which led to the resumption of the Joint Higher Committee and the signing of 13 memoranda of understanding in key sectors. Egypt voiced its intent to build on this momentum to advance cooperation in economy, investment, energy, and culture.
On regional issues, Abdelatty outlined Egypt's continued efforts, in partnership with international actors, to reinforce the Sharm el-Sheikh peace agreement and implement the UN Security Council resolution on Gaza. He highlighted preparations for the upcoming International Conference for Early Recovery and Reconstruction, noting that its success would positively impact stability in Lebanon and the broader region. During the visit, Abdelatty held phone calls with former Presidents Amine Gemayel and Michel Suleiman, as well as former Prime Minister Tammam Salam, reiterating Egypt's firm stance against any infringement on Lebanon's sovereignty and in support of its national institutions.
