Court rejects El-Rufai's fresh bail bid over disputed medical report

A Kaduna State High Court has dismissed a fresh bail application by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai after the National Hospital Abuja disowned a medical report submitted in support.

Justice Darius Khobo rejected the application on July 2, 2026. The request claimed El-Rufai needed treatment for advanced metastatic prostate cancer unavailable in Nigeria. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission presented evidence from the hospital's Chief Medical Director Prof Muhammad Raji Mahmud showing no record of El-Rufai at the facility and that the report lacked authorisation.

The court ruled that the disowned document could not support the bail request. It directed the ICPC to allow El-Rufai access to his personal physicians and escort him to any chosen diagnostic facility in Nigeria during the trial.

El-Rufai faces a nine-count charge of conferring benefits under false pretences and dishonest disposal of loan funds. He has pleaded not guilty. This marks his third unsuccessful bail attempt and he remains in ICPC custody while also facing a separate case at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
