DCI dismisses claims Indian doctor poisoned Raila

Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations has rejected social media claims that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was poisoned by an Indian doctor paid KSh 300 million. The agency described the posts as fabricated.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations issued a statement on Friday, June 12, flagging a viral post that alleged an Indian doctor confessed to using botulinum toxin to poison Raila Odinga during treatment in India. The DCI said the circulated information was fake and urged the public not to believe such claims.

Raila Odinga died on October 15, 2025, while taking a morning walk in Kerala, India. He was taken to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam but could not be revived. Cardiac arrest was listed as the immediate cause, alongside prior health issues including a recent stroke, diabetes and hypertension.

The former prime minister was buried on October 19, 2025. President William Ruto had arranged his travel to India for treatment after consulting the family. Speculation about the circumstances of his death has continued on social media despite the official account.
