In his debut interview with the club, De Zerbi responded to backlash over comments he made about Mason Greenwood during his time at Marseille. Those remarks, describing Greenwood as a 'good guy' who had paid a 'heavy price,' drew ire from groups including Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane, and Spurs Reach ahead of his appointment. The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust also raised concerns, though club officials discussed the matter with De Zerbi during negotiations before confirming him in the role. De Zerbi expressed regret, stating, 'I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women or violence against anyone more broadly.' He emphasized his lifelong commitment to protecting the vulnerable, adding, 'I am sorry if I offended anyone’s feeling with this subject matter – I have a daughter and I’m very sensitive to these things.' He hoped time would allow people to understand his intentions better. Greenwood faced serious charges in 2022, which the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped due to insufficient evidence. He has since continued his career in France. De Zerbi also asserted he would remain Tottenham boss next season regardless of relegation risks.
