Hilda Alcántara, 73, died at 10:35 a.m. on January 1 at IMSS-Bienestar Hospital in Oaxaca from pulmonary thromboembolism following surgery for severe polytrauma, including fractures to her femur, tibia, fibula, and multiple ribs. This marks the 14th fatality from the incident that initially claimed 13 lives and injured 98.
Sheinbaum visited Oaxaca hospitals the day after the derailment, announcing initial 30,000-peso payments as part of broader reparations. Dozens remain hospitalized, including 3-year-old Astrid Ximena, now at Mexico City's Hospital México Siglo XXI.
While some passengers alleged speeding, Sheinbaum cautioned against speculation, tasking the General Prosecutor's Office with determining causes and the operator's status. The Navy reported no track faults, and expert probes continue.
