Egypt outlines 2026-2031 Human Rights Strategy to European Parliament

Egypt is drafting its second five-year National Human Rights Strategy covering 2026 to 2031. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty presented the plans to a European Parliament delegation on Tuesday. The meeting highlighted Egypt's role in regional stability and refugee hosting.

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who chairs the Supreme Standing Committee for Human Rights, described ongoing efforts to strengthen civil, political, economic, and social rights. He pointed to initiatives such as Decent Life and 100 Million Healthy Lives that aim to expand social protection and improve conditions for women, children, youth, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

The European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights, led by Mounir Satouri, acknowledged Egypt’s economic and regional challenges. The delegation praised the country for hosting millions of refugees and described Egypt as a key partner in supporting stability, noting the recent upgrade of relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Abdelatty stressed the value of dialogue with civil society and international bodies including the United Nations and the European Union. He noted Egypt’s active participation in the UN Human Rights Council and its planned membership term from 2026 to 2028.
