Fitbit's AI coach expands to iOS and international users

Google is expanding its redesigned Fitbit app and Gemini-powered AI health coach to iOS users and Fitbit Premium subscribers in several countries. The rollout begins on February 10 for iPhone owners, following an initial Android preview in the US. The update aims to provide more personalized wellness guidance through AI features.

The redesigned Fitbit app, which debuted as an optional public preview for US-based Android users with Fitbit Premium in late October, is now opening to iOS users starting February 10. This expansion also brings the Gemini AI-powered "Coach" feature to Premium subscribers aged 18 and older in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, available on both iOS and Android devices.

The app features a cleaner user interface organized into four main tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health. The Today tab emphasizes weekly trends for a better view of progress, while the other tabs offer detailed metrics on areas like sleep stages and vitals. Integrated throughout is the new Coach, accessible via an "Ask Coach" prompt, which uses real-time and historical data to interpret metrics and create personalized action plans.

Users can ask questions such as, "I have 30 minutes for a workout… What do you recommend?" or "How can I improve my VO2 max?" or even correlate personal stats like, "Do I sleep better on days when I get more steps in?" During onboarding, a 5-10 minute text or voice conversation helps the AI understand goals, available equipment, injuries, and motivations. The plan adjusts dynamically based on factors like training load, readiness score, and recovery data.

Participation in the Coach is opt-in, and Premium requires $10 a month or $80 a year. It works with the latest Fitbit trackers, smartwatches, and Pixel Watch models. During the preview, users can toggle between old and new designs without data loss and provide feedback via an integrated tool. Google developed the Coach with input from health experts and a consumer advisory panel, stating that user data will not be used for Google Ads. The company has not set a firm end date for the preview, planning further expansions.
