Former APC chairman Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said the absence of ideology in Nigerian parties drives defections based on personal interests. He spoke at the July 15 book launch in Abuja. Other speakers urged protection of democratic gains since 1999.
Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje spoke at the public presentation of the book Nigeria’s Journey to Democratic Rule by Onyekachi Eze-Odezulu. He stated that political parties lack clear philosophies and policy directions.
Ganduje said the absence of strong ideological foundations has weakened party politics and encouraged defections ahead of the 2027 elections. He called for internal democracy and issue-based politics to restore public confidence.
Senator Tanko Al-Makura noted Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999. He urged citizens to safeguard these gains through reforms and respect for the rule of law.
Minister Mohammed Idris said the Tinubu administration supports democratic consolidation via the Renewed Hope Agenda. The book documents the transition from military rule to civilian governance in 1999.
