Gangster dies of gunshot wounds in Uttarakhand; family alleges police conspiracy

Gangster Vinay Tyagi died in a Uttarakhand hospital three days after being shot while in police custody. His family has accused the police of complicity in his killing and demanded a CBI probe. Authorities claim the attack stemmed from personal rivalry.

Vinay Tyagi, a notorious gangster, succumbed to his injuries at AIIMS-Rishikesh on Saturday, December 27, 2025, three days after assailants fired at the police vehicle transporting him to Laksar court. The attack occurred near the Laksar flyover on Wednesday, leaving Tyagi with three bullet wounds and injuring two policemen.

Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Singh Dobhal stated that the two bikers, Sunny Yadav and Ajay, were arrested on Thursday. They confessed to the shooting due to personal rivalry and have been charged with murder following Tyagi's death. Yadav, a convicted murderer on parole, had previously worked for Tyagi.

Tyagi's sister, Seema Tyagi, who was at the hospital, alleged deliberate negligence in his treatment to hide the truth. She claimed, "First, these two sent Vinay to jail on false charges. After that, they held Vinay's wife hostage for two days and released her only after forcing her to transfer the ownership of land worth crores of rupees to their names." She accused a Dehradun doctor and prominent contractor of conspiring with police to seize the family's valuable properties and demanded security for relatives along with a CBI inquiry.

The Tyagi Mahasabha described the death as suspicious, labeling it a murder with police connivance. Office-bearer Praveen Tyagi said, "The police got the criminals to kill Tyagi to avoid a police encounter."

A native of Khaikhedi village in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, Tyagi was affiliated with the Sunil Rathi gang and faced 57 serious criminal cases across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, including murder, extortion, and robbery. His wife had served twice as head of Purkazi block and once contested elections as an independent from Deoband constituency. Sources indicated Tyagi amassed crores in benami properties from criminal proceeds in Delhi, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and elsewhere.
