Google begins counting all Android backups toward storage limits

Starting today, Google is including all Android backup data in users' account storage calculations. The change applies immediately to new users and will roll out to existing ones over the coming months.

Previously, only media in Google Photos and MMS content counted against the 15GB free limit. Now the full backup, including app data and settings, will be factored in.

A Google spokesperson said the average addition would be around 40MB. New controls will let users choose which items to include, such as device settings, call history, or SMS and MMS messages.

The update follows a May test that lowered the default free storage for new accounts from 15GB to 5GB. Users can manage the options in the backups section of their device settings.
