The Gujarat High Court on July 7, 2026 upheld death sentences for 38 convicts and life terms for 11 others in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts that killed 56 people.
On July 26, 2008, coordinated blasts from boat-shaped bombs struck 22 locations across Ahmedabad, killing 56 people and injuring over 200. A special trial court had convicted 49 of 77 arrested suspects in February 2022 and sentenced 38 to death and 11 to life imprisonment.
The Gujarat High Court confirmed the trial court verdict on July 7, 2026 while hearing appeals. The convicts belonged to modules based in six states and were linked to Indian Mujahideen.
Families of victims welcomed the ruling. Yash Vyas, who lost his father and brother at the Civil Hospital trauma centre, called the judgment appropriate. Amrish Patel, whose father died helping blast victims, said justice had been delivered.
Three Indian Mujahideen commanders remain at large. Gujarat Police continue to pursue Riyaz Bhatkal, Mohsin Chaudhary and Amir Reza Khan with rewards announced for information leading to their arrests.
