Vinicius Oliveira, the widower of teacher Juliana Faustino Bassetto, was discharged from hospital after intoxication during a swimming class at a gym in São Paulo's east zone. The incident led to Juliana's death. Police are investigating the gym's owners.
Vinicius Oliveira, 31, the widower of teacher Juliana Faustino Bassetto, 27, was discharged from hospital on Sunday (15) after being admitted since Saturday (7) due to chlorine intoxication during a swimming lesson at C4 Gym in Parque São Lucas, east zone of São Paulo.
The couple was in the pool when a valet, who also handled water maintenance without proper training, left a bucket of chlorine near the lane. This led to intoxication in the confined space. They informed an instructor and went to a hospital in Santo André, in the ABC region. Juliana's condition deteriorated, causing cardiac arrest and death.
A video shared by family shows Vinicius leaving the hospital, saying: "Victory today".
Police Civil is investigating the case as doloso homicide. Delegate Alexandre Bento from the 42nd Police Station (Parque São Lucas) holds three gym partners responsible: Celso Bertolo Cruz, Cesar Bertolo Cruz, and Cezar Augusto Miquelof Terração. According to Bento, the gym focused on profit, using excessive chlorine — a daily load meant for a week — to conceal dirty water and keep the pool open.
Bento requested temporary arrest of the partners, supported by the Public Prosecutor's Office, but the court denied it, imposing alternative measures instead. The judge noted that the suspects appeared at the station, the gym was sealed, water forensics conducted, and products seized. Restrictions include monthly court appearances, prohibition from approaching within 200 meters of Juliana's family home or the gym, no contact with witnesses, and limits on leaving the jurisdiction for more than seven days without permission.
The partners' defense stated they will comply with the measures and remain available for clarifications, trusting in a technical and impartial investigation.
