After winning the Texas Democratic U.S. Senate primary last month, state Rep. James Talarico announced a record $27 million fundraising haul for the first quarter of 2026—the largest ever for a Senate candidate in an election year's opening quarter. The grassroots-driven funds, mostly small donations, bolster his general election bid against the winner of the ongoing GOP primary runoff between Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Talarico, fresh off his March 3 primary victory over Rep. Jasmine Crockett, disclosed the total on April 15. His campaign emphasized that 97% of contributions were $100 or less, with strong support from teachers in nearly every Texas county. 'This is a message from grassroots Texans tired of a broken, corrupt system,' Talarico said, framing the haul as uniting Democrats, Republicans, and Independents against billionaire influence and to lower family costs.
Campaign manager Seth Krasne noted, 'Texas demands unprecedented resources amid expensive media markets—this positions us strongly.' The figure outpaced recent Democratic Senate fundraising, per Politico, though history cautions: Beto O’Rourke's $38M in 2018 Q3 fell short against Ted Cruz, and Jaime Harrison's $57M in 2020 couldn't overcome Lindsey Graham.
Talarico's progressive record includes opposing 2023 transgender care restrictions for minors and supporting a 2019 bill broadening child abuse definitions to include non-affirmation of gender identity.
