Linux Foundation launches x402 Foundation for AI payments

The Linux Foundation has launched the x402 Foundation to create standards for internet-native payments involving AI agents, APIs, and applications. The effort is based on a protocol contributed by Coinbase.

The new foundation aims to establish common protocols that enable seamless transactions between AI systems and online services.

It draws backing from major technology and financial firms including AWS, American Express, Cloudflare, Google, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa.

The initiative seeks to address the growing need for reliable payment mechanisms as AI applications expand across the internet.
