Los Angeles ends Flock Safety contract over data concerns

Los Angeles is allowing its three-year contract with Flock Safety to expire, ending use of the company's license plate reader cameras.

The Los Angeles Police Department announced it will stop operating 138 Flock cameras mounted across the city. Officials cited uncertainty over data ownership and potential sharing with federal agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A city council member had moved in May to halt new agreements with the Atlanta-based company. The LAPD had previously described the cameras as effective investigative tools.

Flock stated that misperceptions prompted the decision and that it had discussed privacy protections with the police department. The company said it remains open to further talks.

Several other cities including Oakland, Dayton and Evanston have also canceled contracts with Flock this year amid similar issues over data access and camera removal.
