Luís Eduardo Falcão, mayor of Patos de Minas from the Republicanos party, resigned on Thursday (April 2), one day before the electoral incompatibility deadline. He also stepped down from the presidency of the Associação Mineira de Municípios (AMM). Vice-mayor Sandra Cristina Gomes will take over the municipal executive.
Luís Eduardo Falcão announced his resignation in a speech at Patos de Minas city hall. Elected mayor in 2020 and reelected in 2024 with 85% of valid votes, Falcão said he needs to fulfill his duty in other spaces.
In addition to the mayoralty, Falcão resigned from the AMM presidency, to which he was elected in April 2025 for a term until 2028. At the association, he emphasized a management focused on closeness to municipalities and municipalism: “We traversed all regions of Minas, listening to those on the front lines. Municipal managers truly know the challenges and solutions for our state”.
Sandra Cristina Gomes (PL) will assume the mayoralty. At AMM, 1st vice-president Lucas Vieira Lopes (PSB), mayor of Iguatama reelected in 2024 with 86.36% of votes, will take the presidency. In March, Falcão mentioned on social media a possible candidacy on Senator Cleitinho's ticket for 2026.
