Meetup redesigns mobile app to ease in-person meetups

Meetup has launched a redesigned mobile app aimed at making it simpler for users to connect in real life. The update, rolling out on December 18, 2025, features a modern interface and tools to build user confidence in attending events. Owned by Bending Spoons since 2024, the platform is experiencing a resurgence among younger users.

Meetup, a platform for organizing in-person events that predates Facebook and Twitter, has undergone significant changes in ownership. In 2017, founder Scott Heiferman sold it to WeWork, which later divested it before filing for bankruptcy in 2023. By 2024, Italian tech firm Bending Spoons, known for acquiring Evernote in 2022, took over operations.

Post-pandemic, Meetup has seen renewed interest. As of late 2025, Gen Z and young Millennials constitute 40 percent of its active users and are the most engaged group. The app recorded a 20 percent year-over-year rise in new registrations this year.

The redesigned Android and iOS app, aligning with the platform's updated website, introduces refreshed fonts, vibrant icons, and improved spacing. Chiara Vivaldi, Meetup's product lead, described the changes as making the app "vibrant, fun and more modern than before." Core features remain, but navigation is streamlined—users can now access profiles and groups directly from the homepage.

To encourage attendance, especially among women, the app displays gender and age breakdowns for event sign-ups on event pages. Enhanced user profiles provide more details about potential attendees, while a new Super Organizer badge recognizes dedicated event planners, signaling their commitment to community building. Vivaldi noted these elements aim to "reduce the friction of attending events where you might not know anyone."

Looking ahead, Bending Spoons plans further enhancements. Early in 2026, it will merge the separate member and organizer apps into one. This unification, informed by the fact that 75 percent of organizers began as members, will include QR-based ticketing for check-ins. "[Organizers] are part of the community. They want to be in the action, and so having them within the same app is conducive to that. They can jump into conversations, look at other events, making it all feel a bit more organic," Vivaldi explained.

The updated app is available now on the App Store and Google Play.
