Ministers committee confirms environmental approval for Volta green ammonia project

The Committee of Ministers confirmed environmental permits for three investment projects totaling US$2.828 million, including Chile's first industrial-scale green ammonia initiative.

The Committee of Ministers, led by acting Environment Minister José Ignacio Vial, approved claims for the Volta Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Plant, promoted by Mejillones Ammonia Energy with a US$2.5 billion investment. The complex will be located in the Antofagasta Region and will produce up to 620,000 tons of ammonia and 110,000 tons of hydrogen per year, powered by a 600 MW solar plant.

Energy Minister Ximena Rincón stated that “hydrogen and green ammonia are an incredible opportunity for Chile” and stressed the need to move forward with projects that create jobs. Construction of the plant is scheduled to begin in 2027 with commercial production projected for 2029.

The committee also confirmed permits for the Urbanya Etapa 1 real estate project in Pudahuel, involving US$203 million, and the Ciclón Exploradora mining project in the Antofagasta and Atacama regions, with US$125 million. Vial highlighted the commitment to speed up environmental evaluations while upholding high technical standards.
